The Great Little Trains of Wales are a very special way of seeing some of the best scenery in the British Isles. All are narrow gauge steam railways, some over 100 years old and share the charm of steam trains with polished paintwork and brass. Most originally served to carry Welsh slate from the quarries to the sea.
Monday: We collect you from home to join your tour coach to travel to North Wales, arriving late afternoon at the Royal Victoria Hotel for a four night stay with dinner, bed & breakfast.
Tuesday: Our first visit today takes us to the shores of Cardigan Bay and Portmeirion. We visit this unique attraction, setting for to cult TV series ‘The Prisoner’. From here we drive to Betws-y-Coed where we have a break with time for lunch. This afternoon we head for Bala and enjoy a ride on the diminutive Bala Lake Railway, returning later to the hotel.
Wednesday: This morning we join the Llanberis Lake Railway for a delightful ride along the lake shore. We then have time to visit The National Slate Museum (free entrance), sited in the Victorian workshops built in the shadow of Elidir mountain, site of the vast Dinorwig quarry. Here you can travel into the past of an industry and a way of life that has chiselled itself into the very being of this country. The Workshops and Buildings are designed as though quarrymen and engineers have just put down their tools and left the courtyard for home, while an array of talks and demonstrations, including slate-splitting, give you a real insight into quarry life. Free time in Llanberis this afternoon and the opportunity to take ‘A Majestic Mountain Adventure’ and have a ride on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. This world famous little train takes you on a breath-taking ride to the top of Snowdon, at 3560 ft (1085m) the highest mountain in England and Wales (ticket not included in the cost of your holiday).
Thursday: We travel to Llandudno where we join the train for a delightful ride along the Vale of Conwy to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Here we catch the Ffestiniog Railway for an exhilarating ride across the mountains, descending to the sea at Porthmadog. We have time to explore and have lunch in Porthmadog before catching the Welsh Highland Railway train which takes us through Beddgelert to Caernarfon. Here we rejoin the coach and travel back to our hotel.
Friday: We depart after breakfast and begin our homeward journey with suitable stops en route.
