The Highland Lines - We take to the trains to show you some of the best scenery that Scotland has to offer. A visit to the Cairngorms gives us a chance to ride the fastest mountain railway in the country. To finish the tour we enjoy a ride on the fabulous Settle to Carlisle Railway, taking us through spectacular northern landscapes and crossing the famous Ribblehead Viaduct.

Our Itinerary

Friday We collect you from home and take you to your waiting tour coach and travel to the Carlisle area for an overnight stay with dinner, bed and breakfast. Dinner on arrival.

Saturday We continue north through the Lowland Hills past Glasgow to Stirling, Perth and Pitlochry, arriving early evening at the Grant Arms Hotel, Grantown–on–Spey for a five night stay with dinner, bed and breakfast.

Sunday to Wednesday During your stay in Grantown–on-Spey the following excursions are included:

• We make for Aviemore where we take a break before heading into the beautiful Glenmore Forest Park on our way to Cairngorm. Here we have the opportunity, weather permitting, to take a ride on the fantastic Cairngorm Mountain Railway, taking us to the top in just 8 minutes. We can have lunch in the Panoramic Restaurant and admire the superb views. Alternatively lunch break would be in Aviemore. This afternoon we ride on the Strathspey Railway from Aviemore to Boat of Garten and Broomhill.

• We head west around Beauly Firth, along Glencarron to Stromferry and Kyle of Lochalsh. After a break we join the Scotrail train for one of the Great Railway Journeys of the World - the Kyle Line. The route takes us through some of the best scenery in the country, skirting lochs and passing remote villages on the way back to Inverness. Here we rejoin the coach for the ride back to Grantown.

• This excursion takes us south west along the shore of Loch Laggan and through Glen Spean to Fort William. Here we have another train journey, this time by steam train on the famous ‘JACOBITE’ along the celebrated West Highland Line to Mallaig. This spectacular line passes hidden lochs and inlets, silver sands, and crosses the magnificent Glenfinnan viaduct on its way west. Mallaig is a major fishing port and we have time to wander around the harbour and explore before we catch the train for the return journey to Fort William, where we rejoin the coach for the ride back to Grantown.

• This morning we travel to Kingussie station where we catch the train to Inverness. The line takes us through spectacular scenery over the line’s summit at Slochd before descending into the Highland Capital, Inverness. You will have free time to explore the city and obtain lunch before catching the return train to Kingussie.

Friday We leave the Highlands and retrace our steps south towards Perth, before heading across the Forth Bridge, with superb views of the iconic Forth Rail Bridge, and skirting Edinburgh on our way towards Carlisle for our overnight stop - dinner, bed and breakfast.

Saturday After breakfast we leave for Carlisle station to catch the train for a ride on the famous Carlisle to Settle line. This spectacular line passes through some of the most rugged scenery in the north and a highlight is the crossing of Ribblehead viaduct. Leaving the train at Skipton we have time for lunch before we continue our way home to your waiting taxi.
