Monschau, in the Eifel Mountains region of Germany is an idyllic town of narrow steep-roofed, half-timbered houses and inns clustered along the banks of the River Rur. The area is steeped in 2,000 years of history, from the Romans to Charlemagne who chose the Eifel region and the City of Aachen as the centre of his Empire. This area is well known for being a photographers’ paradise and is certainly a good example of ‘Picturebook Germany’.

The combination of this lovely setting and the first class facilities of our hotel make this an ideal location to experience the atmosphere of traditional European Christmas markets. The Monschau Christmas Market is small but beautiful, in December 1999 the town of Monschau received an award for being one of the most beautiful Christmas Markets in western Germany.

Our Itinerary

Friday: We travel to Folkestone and our Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. Once in France we continue on through the Pas de Calais and Belgium and into Germany, arriving at our hotel in Monschau with time to settle in before dinner.

Saturday: We have a day at leisure in Monschau where the Christmas market is set amongst the cobbled streets and well preserved half-timbered houses.

Sunday: Today we visit Valkenburg, a delightful little Dutch hill town built around a romantic ruined castle and sitting at the ‘Crossroads of Europe’ between Germany and Belgium.  The unique Christmas market takes place in beautifully lit old caves which run underneath the town. (Please note that there is an entrance charge of approx. 5 euros to the caves)

Monday: After breakfast we make the return journey to Calais and our Eurotunnel crossing back to Folkestone.  We should be back in our local area mid-.evening.
