The Isle of Man lies at the very heart of the British Isles, steeped in romance, studded with history and shrouded in misty legend. The island is 225 square miles of uncrowded, unspoilt landscapes with an abundance of historical sights and crammed with things to see and do. Officially a crown dependency, it is part of Great Britain and yet it stands alone in many ways, with its own parliament (the oldest of all parliaments formed in 979 AD), laws, currency and language. Lying in the middle of the Irish Sea, it is blessed with the mildest of British climates, with its shores warmed by the gulf stream. The combination of a mild climate and wonderful scenery made the island popular with the Victorians and it is famous for having Britain’s first Electric Tramway and is noted for its gracious buildings and lovely promenades. Today it is still popular for its very tranquil atmosphere and as a place where you can enjoy a slower pace of life and enjoy the warm hospitality of the local people. Douglas has a delightful promenade with a three mile sweep of sand, horse-drawn trams and Victorian Pier. Together with all the traditional seaside attractions Douglas is a superb resort and an ideal base from which to explore the delights of the island.
