This tour will take you to the Tyrol a Western Austrian state known for it’s ski resorts, historic sites and folk traditions. Step back in time wandering through the Hofburg in Innsbruck and the Kufstein fortress.
Sunday –This morning we collect you from your home to meet our tour coach, which will make the journey to Folkestone for our Channel crossing. We continue to our overnight hotel in Saarbrücken, making suitable comfort stops en-route.
Monday – Following breakfast we will continue our journey to Tyrol, where we will be greeted by a welcome drink on arrival and plenty of time to settle in to the hotel before dinner.
Tuesday – Today we visit Innsbruck, the capital city of Tyrol, which is nestled scenically at the foot of the Northern Chain Mountains. This charming alpine city, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, prides itself on it’s friendly welcoming atmosphere. We will have a guided city tour giving us the chance to see some of the highlights including Hofkirche or Court Church and the iconic Golden Roof. Following this we continue on to Ambras Castle, a Renaissance jewel built in the 16th Century, which lies in the hills above Innsbruck. We will learn about the history of the castle through a guided tour. The Hofburg (Imperial Palace) is a formed Habsburg Palace in Innsbruck, it is considered one of the three most significant cultural buildings in the country, along with the Hofburg Palace and Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. We will enjoy a tour here before heading back to the hotel.
Wednesday - Today we visit the medieval Kufstein, lying on the Tyrolean-Bavarian border. Kufstein’s mighty fortress dates back to the 13th century and overlooks the green river Inn. We will take the panorama cable car up to fortress, which now houses a museum of local history as well as the Hero’s Organ, the largest open-air organ in the world. We continue via the pretty lakeside town of Walchsee and around the “Wilder Kaiser” mountain to Kitzbühel. Wander through the internationally famous town before enjoying a horse-drawn carriage ride.
Thursday - This morning after breakfast we travel down the Inn Valley to Jenbach and join the original Achenseebahn Cog Railway, which dates back to 1889. These are some of the steam engines in the world still to be used for public transport. The train winds its way up above the Inn Valley to the shores of the largest alpine lake in Tyrol, Lake Achen. We will have the chance to admire the stunning scenery of the lake from on board a boat as you sail across the lake from Seespitz to Pertisau. Following our boat cruise, we will return to the hotel.
Friday - Today we drive to Brixlegg and visit the romantic gardens of Matzen Castle. The delightful English landscape garden is an oasis to sit and muse or to wander around. The castle itself was reconstructed and is now a hotel, and also holds a restaurant and café. After this we will head down to Inn Valley to Pill to visit the Tyrolean Schnapps Musuem. Learn how schnapps is distilled and enjoy tasting some of the local firewater. Continue the short distance to the smallest town in Tyrol, Rattenberg, founded some 700 years ago. Famed for its glass production, visit the Kisslinger glass blowing factory, and see glass ornaments produced by hand. Afterward there is a chance to purchase souvenirs or stroll through the medieval town.
Saturday - After a final breakfast in Austria we will depart to our overnight hotel making suitable stops on route.
Sunday - We begin our final journey back to Wiltshire, where you will meet your taxi to take you home.

Returning to the first Austrian hotel that Chandlers ever stayed at when we went in 1995! Hotel Auffacherhof in Wildschönau enjoys a peaceful location next to the Schatzbergbahn Cable Car. The hotel features a relaxation room with hay beds and water beds, as well as four different saunas. The rooms feature carpeted floors and wooden furniture. All rooms come with a flat-screen TV, en suite & hair dryer. There is a lift in the hotel.
